Rennie Neubecker: News & Updates

'BOUT TIME - June 21, 2008

Will wonders never cease...
I finally got my technical problems dealt with & NOW we have pictures from the MAY LexJam II Unplugged. Yee-haw!
Our May session was great & the weather was perfect, this made for an afternoon of killer music & seems our visitors agreed, though a few people were chilly in the shade. I'll stop here about Mays LexJamII unplugged, because the JUNE edition is coming up next week. so mark your calenders for
JUNE 28th 1-5PM down at the good 'ol Lexington Center. I really hope to see more people showing up and watching this thing grow. (This makes me think about my rant from March 3 rd go read it...now...). I will be relentless in my mission to get Live Music back on the streets. Which brings me to:
The Street Busker program. Yes it is still alive. You can contact me Or Shanna Perino @ shanna@downtownlex.com. either one of us can provide the contract. As I mentioned in an update on MAY 21 st, these are paid positions +tips.
We are looking for donations in the fund to add more spots and/or keep the program going further into the fall.
LexJam & Gallery Hop
If you missed LexJam last night for Gallery Hop well...then you missed another great evening of music.(at the risk of offending you, I will say SHAME ON YOU, ya should'a went) the main flavor of the evening was started out by Some Other Meanness. a rockin band that was born out of LexJam.
With the dynamics of Scott Whiddon on lead guitar & Brian Powers on bass. These guys rock & when you see them scheduled to play, you need to go check them out.
After their performance, next up was the band Old Vine Street Social & Pleasure Club, another band born out of LexJam. This band is headed up by The Founding Father of LexJam, Mr Tom Martin. With Tom on keyboards & Mike Thompson on drums and Brian Back on bass Plus the rest of the musicians (whose names elude me). finished out the evening with a rockin hour +, of jam style music. crossing a broad musical spectrum. Again you need to see their power performance when you see them listed to play. Hey even my 72 year old Mum-in-Law who dos'nt look even close to her age & drove down from Huntington WV by herself. (yes shes that sharp) was absolutely impressed by the LexJammers. She was on the edge of her seat & ready to dance I think.
LexJam regular Sherry McGee finished the last song with her absolutely stunning drum playing. As I'v mentioned in the past, this lady can really play the drums. One of the best for sure.
What a A full evening of music with the Stella Vees at Als Bar, & then we had Actual Size at Goshins Tavern. Actual Size being D J Crowe & Randy.
As always the best part is when DJ does the set of originals. This guy is a great songwriter & you can catch him next week down @ LexJam II Unplugged.
OK... speaking of LexJam II Unplugged, as mentioned its next week Sat June 28th 1 to 5 pm. Wow...End of June Already??? Man where is this summer flying off to.

JULY will bring us a double LexJam With regular LexJam moving to a new venue @ Annette's Cafe & Event Center on Old Vine st. This venue will have food service & an open bar. So now you can feed your belly & quench your thirst while enjoying the music. LexJam II Unplugged will be at the same time at its usual location @ Lexington Center. This session will Be hosted by the lovely & talented CARLA VAN HOOSE. www.carlasings.com. Carla brings a wide variety of music (including awesome originals) to the stage & I feel lucky having played with her & having her cover for me while I'm off on wedding detail. Yup is here, the sons big wedding. I'll have some news about that later in July when we get on the other side of it. I'm hoping to hook up with Ricky Minix while I,m in the south. I'll explain more about that later also. So there you have it, or part of it anyway. I could go on for another hour about music related stuff, but I'm gonna stop here for now. Dont wanna feed ya past your saturation point. If I left anything important out (which I might have), please dont hesitate to e-mail me & I'll fix it, post it, whatever...

Last thing. Want to again thank Paul Dorval for the magnificent job of running sound for LexJam & Thank Tammy & Mark McKinley for all their hard work taking pictures & keeping the LexJam website up. And everyone else who helps with both LexJams. Thanks Guys, I mean that from my heart.

Remember Support Live Music.

P.S. We are taking a break from the Monday Night Jam sessions @ Goshins, and should be back on board after the Green Acres gig in August.

T.D. - June 14, 2008

OK Another reason for the very late update is some technical difficulty with the image bank & photo gallery. I am in contact with my Web Host & hope to have these issues resolved soon.
Working with pics in this web format is a slow process as is, (see my previous bitching about picture posting labor buried in my news pages) when you add technical problems, well it grinds to a halt. Bear with me & we'll get through this thing together. Meanwhile go put on my CD. & I'll go work on the next one..

I Still Know - June 12, 2008

Yea I still know. Trust me its coming.

I know, I know.. - May 30, 2008

Your all sayin, "Ren! Where the heck is our update from LexJam II Unplugged". Its safe, right here between my ears & on my camera disk.... Ok, I know its late but I will have it up soon as I can. I've been busier than a one armed paper hanger. Please bear with me. I gotta get this d*** KOI POND finished. Its stressing me out big time. Ill try to get the update sneaked in this weekend.
In the mean time Mark McKinley has been very timely in updating the lexJam website. So dance your happy butt right on over to www.lexjam.com & check out pics from both of May's LexJams.
Don't forget, we'll be back in the saddle at GOSHINS TAVERN on Monday Night from 8-11 pm.
I'll try to get that update done quickly.

News & pic's of LexJam II Unplugged Vol.2
Coming soon to my website, near you...

New News & Some Old - May 21, 2008

Ok, as promised, we have a lot of news to post here.
First off. I met with Jessica Gies of the Downtown Lexington Corporation we'll call it the DLC for short for the rest of this update.
The DLC is putting a "street musician"(Busker), program in place & has asked for the cooperation of LexJam II Unplugged on several levels. The first of which is to
use LexJam II Unplugged for the auditioning point for this program. They would also like us to help spread the word about this program & encourage talented solo artist's to become part of this program.
Now you may ask "But Ren , the city allows for this already, whats the point?"
I shall tell you. The benefits I see right from the start are threefold (You may see more). First there has been a donation to this program. This will allow theDLC to pay a stipend to these artists in addition to the tips they receive on the street.
2nd. There are many people who play music at various levels in town. This program seeks to maintain a certain level of quality amongst the musicians performing under this program. This will ensure a pleasant listening experience for the public at large & also control the sound level.
3rd. As part of this program we will make sure that performers won't have to compete with other performers overlapping in their "territory". I use that term loosely, because no one owns any "territory", but we can have some control over giving the performers space enough, without other music overriding said performer.
I will also help in any way I can to seek corporate or organizational donations to, 1. Increase the amount of paid stipends and/or 2. to extend the program or 3. add venues.
I am excited about the Busker program & like the fact that the DLC shares LexJams as well as my mission to promote live music in our area.
I will update on this, as information becomes available to me.

On then to other news. I want to draw your attention to an artist from New York That I found by accident. Her Name is Shannon Kealey. You can view her MySpace page @ http://www.myspace.com/shannonkealey.
or put her name in the search bar, but make sure you use the music search feature.
You may ask why I mention Shannon. Well I have been in contact with her & she is interested in collaborating on a few songs on my next CD. Her voice is perfect & her style is folk, making her a perfect fit for some of my music. It is always easier to work with someone that already is in tune with your own reality. Please stop by & check out her music. I believe Miss Kealey has a bright future in the Folk / Indy music arena.
Now I just need to find the time to start tracking the next CD. It will have to wait til at least after The Sons big wedding coming up in a few months. I know a lot of people have been asking, but this last 8 months have been overwhelming. Fear not good people I will try to get this project done & released by this time next year.

You have probably noticed the ME Music News had published the wrong date for both LexJam sessions.
I have e-mailed them asking them to double check the dates before publication. I have also asked for direct contact info, and hope to get a response soon.

Last but not in any way least, I want to thank our very Good friend Graddy Johnson & Hillbilly Graphicsfor the awesome posters he made for LexJam II Unplugged.

Ok speaking of LexJam II Unplugged, it is this Sat. May 24th.
There you have it your NEWS for this week. Please support all live music endeavors, in your own cities as well as ours.
Til Next time, I believe it was Shakespear who said...

See you out & about

NEWS for 05/12/08 - May 12, 2008

Ok Folks
Hope everyone survived their blustery Mothers Day, unless of course you live in the Middle East where it was sunny & hot or in Antarctica where it was sunny & freezing. Oooo I guess our friends in the South West had pretty decent weather. Send it this way guys.

On then to the news....

1st Tonight is Goshins Jam Nite. Although open to anyone who wants to come, lately these sessions have been more acoustic oriented. Need more Bluegrassers to show up too. These next two Monday jams will be used mainly to get ready for
LexJam II Unplugged which is coming up on Sat May 24th. I hope to see as many of you there that can make it.
I will have some of the core members there. I think Dick & Shirley have a reception of sorts to go to, but said they may still be able to come for the later part of the jam. Still have not found a "Special Guest Host" for this session. Of course I've been busy on other things & haven't really pursued it yet. 'Guess I better get busy. Criteria for "Special Guest Host' is as follows; must be an active musician with at least one CD out or In the process of releasing a CD. If you do not fit into that category you can still sign up to co-host any of these events with the core group & myself.
Be on the lookout for the new LexJam II Unplugged posters that will be posted in strategic places around town.
I hope to have a copy on my website soon, but in the mean time you will see them around.

Also next week on May 17th it time for regular LexJam this is as always at Arts Place on North Mill St.
Hope to see you there as well. I'll have more on both of these sessions later this week.

The Long Awaited - April 20, 2008

HOWDY EVERYONE
LexJam II Unplugged the inaugural edition, is now in the bag. Man...what a fun time.
First off I want to thank my "truly excellent" co- hosts for this session. That would be
Shirley & Dick Hudson, Keith Elkins & Carol Smith.
What a nice afternoon of music. Started off with a few of my originals, then was joined by the the whole compliment of co-hosts. we moved into several Bluegrass selections, after which we started bringing in our signups.
Donovan Howard was our first LexJam II unplugged signup
to perform & that he did. This young man has a lot of talent, and sounds a lot like Hank Jr.He played several original tunes that were great. He also joined us on & off throughout the day.
Tony Jasper came with his acoustic & sat in for several songs. We also had Carl Piwinski show up & do several instrumental selections, some of which I believe were of Indian origin. I'm not sure
about some of the others.
I believe I missed someone, wanting to accompany us with a auto harp, however I guess I didn't hear this person ask me where the signup was & left. My bad. "If your out there somewhere, and see this, come back to the next jam. I encourage everyone who likes or plays music to come to either, or both versions of LexJam. You wont be disappointed. Always good music. Always a fun time. Remember to check out the official website @ www.lexjam.com.
I should have pictures posted here soon. The pictures at the LexJam website will also be up soon.
I also want to thank Lexington Center & Caroline Puterbaugh, in particular for providing us a venue in which to share our craft, with the public. Thanks to the musicians who showed up and we look forward to the next one. May 24,2008. "Same Bat time, Same Bat channel", if I may engage in some 20th Century Fox, copyrite infringement.
Ok don't forget I also host a jam session @ GOSHINS TAVERN every Monday night.
It would be good to see more of you show up there. I would like to use some of that time to put music together for the coming LexJam sessions.
If I left anyone or anything out, please let me know in an e-mail, and I will make it right. Also keep me posted on all things musical that I might not have gotten news of yet.

LexJam in A minor - March 13, 2008

OK...A minor being (Am) Attendance minor. Now what I mean by that is We had our biggest snow in 10 years. {5 inches, but we'll talk about that in a minute}. So it was a a display of pure dedication, that it even went on.

The news coverage was on all channels with hundreds & hundreds of closings of all types. But did LexJam close? no it didn't. Several of LexJams finest core band members turned out, plus an engineer or two. There was sound, there were lights,{with a lot of yellow in the spectrum as you see in the pics}, and lots of music.

This provided an opportunity for some pretty cool long jams in the 20 min range,+ or -. Because of this dedication, this lyric came to be...

"Cause when you come out
After the roads have cleared,
You're gonna love the music
That you're gonna hear..."

It was still a lot of fun & a good way to get out into the snow. I have posted some march 8th pics in the photo gallery as well as Goshins pics.{we'll also talk about Goshins in a minute}. The pics tell the rest of Saturdays story. Also see Marks (Marks online Music Source) pictures at the LexJam site.

www.lexjam.com
Now the snow thing...
Its funny how 5" of snow shuts this state down. Its also weird that this is the first time we've had 5" in ten years. We used to get at least 1 or 2 of these a year and a few 1-3 inchers, here... in Lex...

When I grew up, we had these kind of snows all winter long. Even a few BIG a foot or 15" maybe. So I dunno, I'm not a big fan of this Global Warming thing. Hey, I like snow. Let it start a lil before Christmas & stop a lil after Valentines day. 2 months of winter & 10 months of nice short sleeve weather. Hey, thats just my thoughts.

Now Goshins...

A nice turn out of people for the Monday night Jam.
There were the usual suspects including several LexJam regulars with a special appearance by Patty Butcher, & also a Nice dose of Spanky & Patrick of the band Velveeta Jones, just wailin the Blues. I gotta say those chicks got pipes". It was a lot of high energy fun, & the beer was cold. A good turnout & a good time. Don't forget go to the Photo Gallery & you'll see I have posted a few pics there.
Stop by & check it out every Monday
This was also a good chance for me to try out my system with a few new components & finally a rack to carry them in. Its gonna sound pretty good with a little tweaking. Plan on getting it out a lot this year. which has me wanting to say.
Stay Tuned...

I might have some big news to report soon. I'll let you know.

As for now..enough for now...

SNOW, SHOW, SNOW - March 8, 2008

Snow, Snow, Lovely Snow...
Finally got my snow!!!! Now after this, lets get on with SPRING, shall we...

A Goshins Night - March 4, 2008

Attended the Goshins Tavern jam session last night. The second Monday in a row for me. This time I brought the trusty Martin, and had a chance to do a few songs. I think this is good therapy for me, as I like the feedback I get from people. Such as someone notifying me that they could not understand my lyrics. I don't know why all of a sudden It is hard to understand what I am saying in my songs, but because of good feedback like this, I know to work harder on annunciating clearly. In my defense, I will say that I had zero mix in the monitor, so I felt like I was singing with ear plugs in. Its amazing how you cannot hear yourself, with a full band playing. Of course being half deaf doesn't help either. Ok, enough of that "po,po,pitiful me" crap!
There was a decent turn out, and this thing looks like it will grow into something nice & a great way to kill the Monday blahs.
I know I dont remember everyones names, but the usual suspects were on hand, such as; Steve Parrish, Lindsey Olive, Gary Jones, Tom Cool, Keyboard Bob & a cameo appearance on drums by Mike Thompson. Hope the rest of you guys will forgive me as I work to remember all the names. All summed up it was a fun night, full of great music.
Lets do it again next Monday, shall we.
And of course you know I'm not gonna let you forget that this Sat. is Lexjam. See you there.

March News Update & a small Rant - March 3, 2008

Welcome to March folks. Its good to know, spring is just around the corner. We got jipped on winter again,
in that we didn't get much snow, but got plenty of cold. I mean, what the hey...I would rather have a foot of snow than
rain @ 36deg. At least you can do SOME things outside when its snowing but can do nothing when is 36 deg.
and raining !!!

Ok, nuff', about the weather. a new jam has started onMonday nights at Goshins Tavern at 1801 Alexandria Dr. I can just about walk there which makes it quite convenient for me. Oh it goes
from 7:00 til 11:00. Yes PM, do you know any musicians that are going to go play at 7 in the morning???
Also 7-11 @ O'neill's Irish Pub every Wednesday night in Idle Hour Center on Richmond Rd.

LexJam (yes its already that time) Saturday @ Arts Place. which is on North Mill St. In Lexington
of course. 1:00 til 5:00. Bring your friends. Bring your instruments.

Been listening to a One Voice Band CD,"The Road Less Traveled", that was given to me by their
bass player Brian. They are (were) a Christian Rock band, with a slew of excellent original tunes. Some rockin
& a few mellow ones. I met up with bassist Brian & his wife May, on Christmas at Brian's Moms,
(my step brother in laws place, its a long story) house In West Virginia. We jammed for about 4 hours.
May has a beautiful voice & also plays acoustic guitar. David Bell, who is Brian's step dad & my wifes step brother,
is also a bass player & joined in the fun. It was a great way to end Christmas Day. So I now hear that the
band has broken up "for now"... This news is sad because these guys were really talented & I like a lot of the songs
on the "Road Less Traveled" CD. Brian...I see your site is down, E-mail me. Maybe you guys could do a reunion show
@ Ichthus festival. One of, if not the Biggest Christian music festivals in America.

Went to the jam @ Goshins Tavern Last Monday & heard a lot of great music. Its good to see this kind
of thing growing in the region. Jams are great to draw musicians out of the woodwork and into the light. This is the
right way to give birth to a resurgence of live music, in the small venue area. where musicians can get together &
meet other musicians, form bands (or not, no hard fast rules here), and provide live music to the masses. There
are a number of variety of jams in the area, Bluegrass, Rock & Roll, Jazz, Blues. Quite a variety actually. One of my interests, here, is the fact that this regrowth will hopefully lead to more people, weather or not they are musicians themselves, Getting back into & supporting Live Music & the Musicians,
that work so hard to bring it to said masses. The thing about thesemasses in recent times, is that technology
has taken away the ability for them to enjoy Live Music.

I say this because as my good friend Master MusicianTom Cool,( www.tomcool.net ),pointed out at one of his
shows last summer, people lost their passion for "Live Music". Somewhere... I think technology is where. Tom pointed to
a few girls sitting close to the stage as an example. There they sat happily texting away on their cell phones,
oblivious to the music & the purpose of the setting. It was a setting for music. Now before you blast me & say, "But Ren,
they could have been telling someone about the music, ya know telling them to come check it out." Yea, in (our) dreams.
Its not rocket science to figure out, if some one is into the show & telling someone else to 'come Check it out". That
was not happinin here. I could speculate about some of the things that may have been coming & going in those text
messages, but I try to keep this site family friendly.(Hey, they were drunk, college girls). I,ll leave that part at that,'cause
I could really go off on a lot of tangents.
Ipods...The wonderful Ipod. A beautiful thing if you control it & it doesn't control you. Ipods have left a fingerprint
at the robbery scene of "Live Music". How? I'll tell ya. I overheard some guys talking down at a Bar one evening the
conversation went some thing like this:

Guy 1; Hey dude, Robby Fulks is coming to The Dame, I,m gonna check it out, m'bout you

Guy 2; Naw man I got it right here in my Ipod can hear it 10 times in a row if I want.

Guy 1; But dude, it aint live...

Guy 2; Close enough for me...

Ok, here is where technology has turned another brain to mush. Head phones sound unbelievably good today. The
technology has progressed to the point that yes, they sound as though the musician is sitting on top of your head, But...
Its not Live...No, its not close enough... There is not that "ELECTRICITY" that floats in the very air, where live music is
playing. The feel, the smell of equipment, the people (who are into the music, not texting etc.). It all comes together to
create an atmosphere that cannot be reproduced in video, Ipods, etc. (I wonder how much of the music on guy # 2s Ipod
was pirated. How much was actually bought. No I think one of the draw backs of technology as it relates to music is the
ability it has given people to steal music. Now I'm not saying everyone is out there stealing music, but you see
the potential.) The musicians who put on live music have put a lot of work into their music. They deserve to be heard,
they deserve to be paid, they deserve venues to play in with crowds of people dancing between tables, on the dance floor
or wherever they can. Its Live Music people....support it. Love It. Let it move you in ways that technology cant.
Yes we need technology. Yes we need Ipods, yes we need cellphones (not really sure texting is necessary, I mean
its a phone...? Right??.!!?). But I think their is a time & place for those things, and a time & places to take in and embrace
all that is "Live Music". Anyway think of the Musician, its ok to listen. Its ok to help him earn a living. Its ok
To support the venues. Please support "Live Music". Go see a show, Cheer the band on. & TELL THEM you really
appreciate what they do...
Please e-mail or leave me a comment at my guest book page. I really want to know your thoughts on Live Music and welcome your feedback on my thoughts here. I could go into much more detail, but it then gets to be a much
longer read than it already is, for a web page news update. There is so much more that can be said about the need
for people to embrace it & musicians to push it...

Ok enough of my "Story turned to Rant", I'm gonna go listen to my Ipod....
Actually, although it would have a practical application in my studio & music work, I have yet to get an Ipod. Maybe
this summer.
